# Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, in plain English

By [Riddhi Patidar](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/authors/riddhi-patidar)· July 2026· 4 min read Updated 2 October 2026

**The short answer:** The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source standard from Google, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It lets AI agents such as Google's AI Mode and Gemini find products, check live stock, take payment and complete a purchase, all inside a chat. If you sell online, start getting your product data ready now.

Picture someone in Kochi asking Google's AI Mode: "Find me a waterproof Bluetooth speaker under ₹5,000 that can arrive by tomorrow." Through UCP, the AI could check which shops have one in stock, compare delivery times, apply a loyalty discount, pay with the shopper's saved card and confirm the order. The shopper never opens a website.

This is called agentic commerce. An AI agent is an AI tool that can carry out tasks, not just answer questions, and here it does the shopping for the customer.

## What is UCP?

UCP is a protocol, an agreed set of rules for how two computer systems talk to each other. It gives AI agents and online shops a common language for buying and selling.

Without a shared standard, every shop would need a separate connection for every AI tool. With UCP, a shop builds one connection that any agent following the standard can use. Think of it as USB for AI shopping: one standard plug instead of a drawer full of different cables.

It's open source: the rules are public, hosted on GitHub, and anyone can contribute ([ucp.dev](https://ucp.dev/)).

## Who is behind UCP?

Google announced UCP on 11 January 2026 ([Google](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/agentic-commerce-ai-tools-protocol-retailers-platforms/)). It was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. At launch, more than 20 other companies backed it, including Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Adyen, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy's, The Home Depot and Zalando.

If you sell in India, note two things. Flipkart has backed UCP since launch. But Google said the new checkout in AI Mode and Gemini would start with eligible US retailers, so check whether it has reached your country before you spend money on it.

## How buying changes with UCP

Today, buying online usually goes like this: the customer searches Google, clicks a result, browses your site, adds to cart, enters payment details and checks out.

With UCP, the customer asks an AI agent instead. The agent finds matching products, checks stock, applies discounts, takes payment and confirms the order. Your website may never load.

## What UCP means for SEO, AEO and GEO

UCP changes where the sale happens, and that touches all three ways of being found online (our [SEO, AEO and GEO guide](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/blog/seo-vs-aeo-vs-geo-differences-2026) compares them).

- **SEO** (ranking in Google's normal results) still matters: product pages help people and AI tools find you. But ranking first for "buy \[product\]" no longer guarantees the sale, because the purchase can happen in the chat.
- **AEO** (getting your business named in AI answers) needs clear product information. Product, offer and review structured data, code that labels your prices, stock and ratings for machines, helps. But it's a clarity aid, not a shortcut, as our [AEO guide](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/blog/aeo-guide-2026) explains.
- **GEO** (generative engine optimisation, or being cited by AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini) gains a new step. A UCP connection lets an agent complete a sale with you, but it won't make the agent recommend you in the first place.

## What you need to be UCP-ready

If you sell through a platform such as Shopify, ask how much of this it handles for you.

1. **A Google Merchant Center feed.** Merchant Center is where you list your products for Google, and the feed is the file that lists them. The feed needs the `native_commerce` attribute switched on, which opts your eligible products into the "Buy" button in AI Mode and Gemini ([Merchant Center Help](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/17251586)). Products without it stay as normal listings.
2. **Live stock data.** AI agents need to know what's in stock now, not what was in stock yesterday.
3. **Secure payments.** UCP works with your existing payment provider through tokenised payments: your shop receives a secure stand-in, called a token, instead of the customer's card number.
4. **A checkout that suits your platform.** In native checkout, the AI completes the purchase by talking directly to your system. In embedded checkout, your own checkout page appears inside the AI chat.

For your developer: UCP can also run over MCP (Model Context Protocol, a common way to connect AI tools to other software) and A2A (Agent2Agent, a standard that lets AI agents talk to each other).

## What to do this week

1. Check that your products are in Google Merchant Center, with the right prices and stock.
2. Find out how often your stock levels reach that feed, and how close to real time you can get them.
3. Ask your e-commerce platform, developer or payment provider whether UCP checkout is available for your store and country yet.
4. Tidy your product pages: clear names, prices and stock status, with structured data that matches what each page shows.

## How Simeon helps

We start with a UCP readiness audit, checking your Merchant Center feed, product data, stock updates and payments against what UCP needs. Then we can set up the `native_commerce` attribute, tidy your product structured data and, if you want to go all the way, build the full integration, including the MCP or A2A connection. Update history
- **2 October 2026:** Rewritten in plainer English. Removed claims we could not source: that AI Mode serves over a billion users, the "5–10 minutes versus 30 seconds" checkout times, and that products without UCP become invisible to AI. Structured data is no longer listed as a UCP requirement, and the shopping example is now clearly an illustration. Added links to Google's announcement, the Merchant Center help page and ucp.dev, and noted that checkout launched with US retailers.

## Quick answers

What is the Google Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

UCP is an open-source standard from Google, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. It gives AI agents such as Google's AI Mode and Gemini one common way to find products, check stock, take payment and complete a purchase inside a chat.

How does UCP differ from traditional e-commerce?

In normal online shopping, the customer visits your website, browses, adds to cart and checks out. With UCP, an AI agent can do those steps for the customer inside a chat, from finding the product to paying, without the customer opening your site.

Why should businesses care about UCP in 2026?

Because buying is starting to move into AI chats such as Google's AI Mode and Gemini. Being UCP-ready lets an AI agent complete a sale with you; without it, shoppers may have to click through to your website to buy.

How can Simeon Solutions help with UCP implementation?

We check your Merchant Center feed, product data, stock updates and payment set-up against what UCP needs, set the native\_commerce attribute, tidy your product structured data and, if you want, build the full UCP integration.
