# What is Entity SEO & the Knowledge Graph?

SEO·Updated 24 September 2026·By the Simeon Solutions team

Entity SEO is the practice of making your business, people and products clearly identifiable 'things' that search engines and AI assistants can recognise, describe and connect, rather than strings of keywords. Google keeps what it knows about entities in its Knowledge Graph, which feeds knowledge panels and AI Mode.

Also called: entity-based SEO · semantic SEO · Knowledge Graph optimisation

Google summed up the idea in four words when it launched the Knowledge Graph on 16 May 2012: “things, not strings”. By 2020 the graph held over 500 billion facts about five billion entities, drawn from hundreds of sources, including licensed data, public databases, Wikipedia and markup that site owners add. If Google cannot tell your business apart from a similarly named one, it has less to go on when deciding what to show, or say, about you.

## Why it matters in 2026

AI answers lean on entity understanding. When Google launched AI Mode, it said the feature can “tap into fresh, real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph”. Beyond Google, assistants learn which brands belong with which topics from how often, and where, those brands are mentioned. Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands (updated August 2026) found that visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews correlated most with YouTube mentions (about 0.74) and branded web mentions (0.66–0.71), and only weakly with backlinks. Semrush found LinkedIn was the second most-cited domain in ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Perplexity answers in its dataset (March 2026), so your profiles are part of how you are corroborated.

## How do machines recognise an entity?

In simplified terms, search systems move through three steps:

- **Recognition** — spotting a name in text or markup as a possible entity.
- **Reconciliation** — matching it to one known entity using context: category, location, people, website and identifiers.
- **Corroboration** — checking the facts against independent sources. Consistent facts raise confidence; conflicting ones lower it.

The output shows up as knowledge panels, Business Profiles and the way AI answers describe you. [Structured data](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary/structured-data) helps with reconciliation: the Organization sameAs property points to “a page on another website with additional information about your organization”, tying your site to your official profiles.

## How to get it right

1. **Fix one identity.** Decide the exact trading name, legal name, founding year, address, phone number and a one-line description, and use them identically everywhere.
2. **Write a factual About page** that names the founders and key people and links to your official profiles.
3. **Add Organization or LocalBusiness JSON-LD** to the home or about page, with name, legalName, logo, url, address and sameAs.
4. **Align every profile**: [Google Business Profile](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary/google-business-profile), LinkedIn company page, industry directories and marketplaces.
5. **Earn independent mentions** in local press, trade bodies, event listings, podcasts, YouTube and customer case studies. See [brand mentions](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary#brand-mentions).
6. **Check what machines think.** Search your name; if a knowledge panel appears, you may be able to claim it (Google says not every panel is claimable). Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity “What is \[your business\]?” and fix the sources behind wrong answers.

## Common mistakes

- Using a trading name, legal name and abbreviation interchangeably without ever stating how they relate.
- sameAs links to pages you don’t control, or that describe someone else.
- Keyword-stuffed business names, which break Google Business Profile guidelines and blur the entity.
- Writing a promotional Wikipedia or Wikidata entry before any independent coverage exists. Both projects have notability rules.
- Forgetting that people are entities too: authors and founders need consistent bios.

## In practice: a Surat textile exporter

A Surat textile exporter might trade under one name, be registered under another, appear on a B2B marketplace under an abbreviation and on LinkedIn under a fourth. To a machine, that can look like four businesses. The fix is unglamorous: choose the customer-facing name, say on the About page that it is the trading name of the registered company, list both as name and legalName in Organization markup, update every listing and point sameAs at each. It is the first thing we audit in [AEO & GEO work](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/aeo).
