# What is Zero-click search?

SEO·Updated 24 September 2026·By the Simeon Solutions team

A zero-click search ends without the searcher clicking any result, because the results page answers the question itself — in an AI Overview, featured snippet, knowledge panel or local pack. In the US, 68% of Google searches in early 2026 ended this way, so being the source shown matters as much as the click.

Also called: no-click search · zero-click results

SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb panel data found that 68% of US Google searches in January–April 2026 ended without a click, up from about 60% in 2024\. The searcher still got an answer, often with a business name attached, but any visit came later or somewhere else: a phone call, a map direction, a branded search. The figures are American. Indian searchers see the same features, including AI Mode in Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil, though we have not seen a comparable published figure for India.

## Why it matters in 2026

AI summaries have pushed the share up. Ahrefs’ study of 300,000 keywords found that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page (December 2025 data). Pew Research Center, tracking the real browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1%.

Google disputes the scale: in August 2025 it said total organic click volume from Search to websites has been “relatively stable year-over-year”. Either way, being quoted beats being skipped. Seer Interactive’s 2026 analysis of 53 brands found that being cited in an AI Overview earned about 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited.

## How does a search end without a click?

The results page settles the need in one of four ways:

- **Direct answers** — AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets and “People also ask” summarise the answer, with source links.
- **Entity panels** — knowledge panels and Business Profiles show hours, prices, phone numbers and reviews.
- **Actions** — local packs let people call, get directions or book without opening your site.
- **Follow-ups** — people refine the query or continue in AI Mode instead of clicking.

Search Console still records the impression, and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside its normal “Web” performance figures. The separate [generative AI performance report](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary#search-console-ai-report) adds AI impressions, but no clicks.

## How do you stay visible without the click?

1. **Answer first.** Open each page or section with a direct 40–60 word answer, then the detail. That is the part summaries and snippets lift. See [answer-first content](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary#answer-first-content).
2. **Make the answer carry your name.** Original figures, local specifics, named methods and real prices are hard to repeat without citing you.
3. **Treat your [Google Business Profile](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary/google-business-profile) as a landing page.** For local searches, the decision often happens there.
4. **Measure outcomes, not just sessions.** Track impressions, AI impressions, profile calls and direction requests (Business Profile metrics can be linked into GA4), branded searches and enquiries.
5. **Give people a reason to click.** Quotes, booking, calculators, detailed comparisons and specification sheets are things a summary cannot replace.
6. **Think before blocking snippets.** Google’s nosnippet and max-snippet controls also limit what appears in AI features, so you can lose visibility without gaining clicks.

## Common mistakes

- Judging SEO by website sessions alone while calls and direction requests quietly grow.
- Mass-producing thin “what is” pages to chase informational clicks. Summaries answer them anyway, and at scale they can breach Google’s [scaled content abuse](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/glossary#scaled-content-abuse) policy.
- Quoting zero-click percentages without the country, device and year they describe.
- Letting hours, photos and reviews go stale, when that is exactly what a no-click answer shows.

## In practice: an Ahmedabad AC repair service

Someone in Ahmedabad searches “AC repair near me”, sees three businesses in the local pack, compares their ratings and taps Call. The website never loads, yet the job is booked. So the business keeps its hours, service areas and photos current, replies to reviews, watches calls in its Business Profile performance report, and uses its website for what the results page cannot do: maintenance contract details and online booking. More tactics are in our guide to [zero-click search strategies for small businesses](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/blog/zero-click-search-strategies-small-business-2026), and our [web & local SEO](https://www.simeonsolutions.com/web) work is measured the same way.
