AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows on some results pages, usually above the regular results, with links to their sources. AI Mode is a separate, conversational Search mode for multi-part questions and follow-ups. Both use customised Gemini models, Google's core ranking systems and query fan-out.

Also called: AI Overviews · AIO · AI Mode

Neither has a sign-up form or special markup. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to be used as a supporting link, with “no additional technical requirements”. AI Overviews appear only when Google’s systems judge them “additive to classic Search”; AI Mode is aimed at questions that need “further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons”. AI Overviews began rolling out to everyone in the US in May 2024; AI Mode followed in 2025. In India, AI Mode works in English and Hindi and, since October 2025, in Malayalam, Tamil and five other Indian languages.

Why do they matter in 2026?

  • You can measure them. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report — impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, no clicks — reached all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026 (Search Console AI report).
  • You can opt out. The same day, Google rolled out a “Search generative AI control” to all sites. It removes your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover, usually within one to two days, and Google says it isn’t used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search.
  • Clicks follow citations. On informational queries, Seer Interactive found cited pages earned about 120% more clicks per impression than uncited ones; where a brand wasn’t cited, click-through fell 67% over 2025.
  • Readers can pick favourites. Sites a user marks as preferred sources can now surface in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

How do they pick sources?

Both can use query fan-out: the model runs many related searches across subtopics and data sources at once, then assembles the results, which lets Google show “a wider and more diverse set of helpful links” than a classic search. That is why ranking first for the main query isn’t required. Ahrefs found only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 in early 2026.

For local searches the two differ sharply. A US study of about 8,000 queries (August 2026) found 79.8% of AI Mode’s local citations pointed to Google Maps or Business Profile data, while 70.7% of AI Overviews’ local citations went to the business’s own website.

How to get it right

  1. Check eligibility. In Search Console, confirm key pages are indexed and not held back by noindex, nosnippet or robots.txt.
  2. Answer the follow-ups too. Cover costs, comparisons, eligibility and “near me” details in plain text on the page, not only the headline question.
  3. Keep your Google Business Profile current. Hours, services, attributes, photos and replies to reviews.
  4. Keep structured data accurate and matched to visible content, as Google advises — but don’t expect it to unlock anything: Google says no special schema is needed for AI features.
  5. Read both reports. Pair the Generative AI performance report with the regular Performance report: clicks from AI features are counted inside normal web search traffic.
  6. Decide deliberately about opting out. The control removes you from the answer, not from regular results.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking Google-Extended to leave AI Overviews. Google says Google-Extended doesn’t affect inclusion in Search. The Search Console control is the tool for AI features.
  • Reading impressions as visits. The new report counts how often links to your site were shown, not how often they were clicked.
  • Optimising only for the head keyword. With fan-out, the sub-questions decide much of who gets cited (zero-click search explains the wider shift).
  • Assuming US studies hold in India. Most published research is US-based; check your own Search Console data.

In practice: a Madurai restaurant

Someone asks AI Mode for a Chettinad restaurant near Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman Temple that is open late and has parking. If the US pattern holds, the answer leans on Business Profile data — hours, attributes, reviews — so those must be right. An AI Overview on “is Chettinad food very spicy?” cites web pages, so a clear page about the restaurant’s food gives it something to quote. Keeping both current gives the restaurant two routes into the answer.
