AI visibility tracking measures how often AI features and assistants — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude — mention or cite your business, and what traffic they send. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 and a fixed panel of test prompts cover the basics free.

Also called: AI citation tracking · AI search visibility · LLM visibility tracking

No single dashboard covers it, because each engine reports differently or not at all. Google shows impressions, Bing shows citations, analytics shows the visits that arrive with a referrer, and for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude you have to ask the questions yourself. Together they answer three questions: are we shown, are we cited, and does it bring customers?

Why it matters in 2026

The free tools finally exist. Search Console’s generative AI performance report, which counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Discover has its own report), reached all sites worldwide, India included, on 31 August 2026. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report (February 2026) counts citations in Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and select partner experiences, with the grounding queries behind them; citation share followed in June. GA4 added an “AI Assistant” default channel on 13 May 2026.

Citations are also far more volatile than rankings. Orbit Media tracked 72 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity for about 12 weeks: all four engines cited the same domain for the same question only 1.7% of the time, and Claude kept just 30% of its cited URLs two days later. SparkToro found less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google’s AI gives the same list of brands in any two responses. One check is an anecdote, not a trend.

What is in the free stack?

  • Search Console shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, as impressions only. Clicks from those features are mixed into the normal “Web” performance figures. See the Search Console AI features report.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools shows total citations, cited pages, grounding queries and citation share. See Bing AI Performance.
  • GA4 groups referrals from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok under AI Assistant, while Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode stay in Organic Search. For a per-engine view, build an exploration on Session source with the condition “matches regex” and .*(chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude).* — GA4 regex must match the whole value, hence the .*. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links.
  • A prompt panel, a fixed set of real customer questions run by hand, is the only way to see what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude actually say about you.

How to get it right

  1. Verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and log AI impressions and citations each month.
  2. Save the GA4 exploration above and compare AI sessions and conversions month on month.
  3. Write 20–30 prompts that customers actually ask, including local and language variants, not just your brand name.
  4. Run each prompt three times per engine each month — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and AI Mode — and record whether you are mentioned or cited, which URL, and which competitors appear.
  5. Report a visibility rate (the share of runs in which you appear), trended over quarters, not a “rank”. See AI share of voice.
  6. Check crawler access. OpenAI says your content is included in ChatGPT’s summaries and snippets only if OAI-SearchBot isn’t blocked; our free AI visibility checker tests the main AI crawlers.
  7. Ask every new lead how they found you, with “ChatGPT or another AI assistant” as an option.

Common mistakes

  • Treating one screenshot as a ranking.
  • Expecting AI Overview and AI Mode clicks in the AI Assistant channel; they sit in Organic Search.
  • Using “matches regex” without .* and getting zero rows.
  • Tracking only prompts that contain your brand name, which say little about discovery.
  • Reading referral numbers as complete: a visit that arrives without a referrer is counted as Direct, so treat AI figures as a floor.

In practice: a Coimbatore pump manufacturer

A Coimbatore pump manufacturer might track 25 prompts, such as “reliable borewell pump manufacturers in Coimbatore” and “which submersible pump suits a 300-foot borewell”, in English and Tamil across six engines. Three runs a month makes 450 answers, logged in one spreadsheet beside Search Console AI impressions, Bing citations and GA4 AI sessions. After a quarter, the company knows which questions it is visible for and which pages get cited, and can decide what to fix. Our AEO & GEO team runs the same kind of panel for clients.
