The short answer: Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means shaping your website so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews quote it when someone asks a question. SEO tries to win the click. AEO tries to be the answer itself. With most Google searches now ending without a click, being that answer is how customers find you.

Picture someone in Kochi asking their phone, "Which dentist near me does clear aligners?" A few years ago they would have scrolled through a list of links. Today an AI often gives them one answer, with one or two clinics named in it. AEO is the work of making sure one of those names is yours.
This guide explains how AEO differs from SEO, why it matters this year, and what to do first.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO tries to get your page clicked in Google's list of results. You choose keywords, earn links from other websites, and tune each page so it ranks.
AEO tries to get your business named in the answer itself: the paragraph Google's AI Overview or ChatGPT writes before anyone clicks anything. The AI reads your page, lifts a short answer from it and credits you as the source. So your pages need to be easy for a machine to read, quote and trust.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | A click on your link | Being quoted in the answer |
| You write for | Keywords | The questions people ask |
| You measure | Rankings and visits | How often AI answers cite you |
Why AEO matters in 2026
Three things changed how people find businesses, and all three favour the business that gives the clearest answer.
- Most searches now end without a click. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, up from about 60% in 2024 (SparkToro and Similarweb, June 2026). AI Overviews, featured snippets and knowledge panels answer people right on the results page.
- People ask AI tools directly. By July 2025, ChatGPT users were already sending about 2.5 billion prompts a day (OpenAI, via TechCrunch). These tools show the websites they used, so being one of them is a new way to be found.
- Voice assistants read out one answer. Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa don't read a list of links. If your page doesn't answer the question plainly, they have nothing to use.
What a good AEO strategy looks like
None of this needs tricks. It needs pages that answer real questions clearly, from a business the AI can check.
- Put the answer first. Answer the page's main question in the first 50 to 80 words, then add the detail. In our experience it is the change that helps most, and it costs nothing.
- Use your customers' questions as headings. Write each heading as a question people really ask, and answer it in the paragraph straight after, so that paragraph makes sense on its own. The best source of questions is your sales calls, WhatsApp chats and reviews, not a keyword tool.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its normal ranking systems plus "query fan-out": the AI splits one question into several related searches (Google's AI optimisation guide, May 2026). A page that also answers the obvious next questions gets more chances to be picked.
- Add structured data for clarity, not as a shortcut. Structured data (Organization or LocalBusiness, Article, BreadcrumbList, and FAQPage where the questions are visible) tells search engines who you are and what each page covers. Don't expect it to win citations on its own. FAQ rich results stopped showing on 7 May 2026, and Ahrefs' May 2026 study found that adding schema made no significant difference to AI citations.
- Show who is behind the page. Name the author, show the date and link to your sources. AI answers display where they got their information, and a page with clear authorship is easier to trust and credit.
- Write the way people talk. Use your customer's words: "How do I set up a Google Business Profile?" rather than "A guide to the configuration of Google Business Profile."
Where AI answers show up
AEO isn't about one app. These are the places your customers are most likely to meet an AI answer:
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: the summary at the top of Google's results, with links to the pages it drew on.
- ChatGPT search: answers with links to the web sources it used.
- Perplexity: every answer lists its sources as footnotes.
- Microsoft Copilot: built on Bing's index. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited.
- Google Gemini: Google's assistant in the Google app, on Android and in Google Workspace, drawing on Google's index.
How to measure AEO
AEO won't show up in a normal rankings report. Track these instead:
- Free reports from Google and Bing. Search Console's generative-AI performance report and Bing's AI Performance report both show AI visibility at no cost. Our guide to tracking AI visibility explains how to read them.
- AI Overview tracking. Tools such as Semrush and Authoritas show which of your pages appear in Google's AI Overviews, week by week.
- Visits from AI tools. In your analytics, look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and Google's AI Overview links. Many AI answers send no click, but cited sources still get some visits.
- Asking the AI yourself. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers ask, and "What is [your business] known for?" Note whether you are named, whether the answer is right, and which competitors appear instead.
AEO works alongside SEO, not instead of it
Google says its AI features run on the same ranking systems as normal search (Google, May 2026). So the SEO basics still decide which pages are in the running: a fast, crawlable site that other websites link to. AEO then makes those pages easy to quote.
Think of SEO as building the house, and AEO as labelling every room so a visitor finds what they came for.
What to do this week
- Run a free AI-visibility check on your website to see what AI crawlers can and can't read.
- List the ten questions customers ask you most, from WhatsApp, calls and reviews.
- Rewrite your three most important pages so each one answers its main question in the first 50 to 80 words.
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity those ten questions and write down who they name today. Ask again next month.
How Simeon helps
We start by asking the AI engines the questions your customers ask and recording who they cite today. Then we rework your pages around those questions, tidy your structured data and business details, and check each month whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google and Copilot have started naming you. Update history
- 2 October 2026: Rewritten in plainer English. Removed claims we could not source about how Apple and Gemini choose their answers.
- 24 September 2026: FAQ rich results stopped showing on 7 May 2026 and Ahrefs' May 2026 study found schema alone did not lift AI citations, so we now recommend structured data for clarity only. Added Google's AI optimisation guide on query fan-out, the new free AI reports in Search Console and Bing, and sources for every usage figure; older unsourced statistics were removed.
