AEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot — to find, trust and quote, so your business is more likely to be cited as the source of an answer, not just listed beneath it.
Also called: AEO · answer engine optimization
AEO sits on top of ordinary SEO; it does not replace it. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems”, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before either can cite it. What changes is the unit that wins: engines lift the passage that best answers one specific question, so a page that buries its answer loses to one that states it plainly. AEO overlaps heavily with generative engine optimisation (GEO); our AEO guide goes deeper.
Why does AEO matter in 2026?
- Citations carry the clicks that remain. Seer Interactive’s 2026 analysis of 53 brands found that, on informational queries, pages cited in an AI Overview earned about 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited pages.
- It can finally be measured. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report (impressions only, for AI Overviews and AI Mode) reached every site worldwide on 31 August 2026. Bing Webmaster Tools has reported Copilot citations since February 2026, and GA4 added an “AI Assistant” traffic channel in May 2026.
- The rules are explicit. Google’s spam policies now name “attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search” as spam.
How does an answer engine choose what to quote?
Most follow the same loop. The system interprets the question, often splitting it into sub-questions (query fan-out), and retrieves candidate pages from a search index — which index depends on the engine. It then picks the passages that answer each part, writes a response and cites some of its sources.
So AEO has three jobs: be retrievable, be the clearest answer to a specific question, and be a source the system has reason to trust. Doing all three improves your odds; the engine still decides.
How to get it right
- Open the doors. Allow search crawlers — Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot — in robots.txt and at your firewall or CDN, and keep key facts in HTML text rather than only in images, PDFs or scripts. Our free AI visibility checker tests the basics.
- Get indexed beyond Google. Verify your site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and fix pages that aren’t indexed. An unindexed page cannot be cited.
- Lead with the answer. Under a heading phrased as the customer’s question, answer in two or three sentences, then add the detail (answer-first content).
- Publish what only you know. Fees or fee ranges, service areas, timings, process, credentials and policies. Google’s guide asks for “non-commodity content”: generic advice is everywhere, your specifics are not.
- Keep your facts consistent. Use the same name, address, phone number and description on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories (entity SEO).
- Measure monthly, not daily. Track a fixed set of real customer questions across engines alongside Search Console, Bing and GA4 data (AI visibility tracking).
Common mistakes
- Buying “AI hacks”. Google says Search doesn’t use llms.txt or other special AI files, and needs no special schema or content “chunking”. When Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema, their AI citations barely moved.
- Calling yourself “the best”. Lily Ray found that when a brand’s own “best of” listicle was cited in AI Overviews, that brand was left out of the actual recommendation 69% of the time.
- Judging from one screenshot. Answers vary by engine, wording, location and day. Look for trends over months.
- Believing guarantees. AEO can make you easier to find, understand and quote. It cannot force a citation, and no honest provider will promise one.
In practice: a Kochi clinic
A Kochi physiotherapy clinic whose frozen-shoulder page answers “How many sessions will I need, and do you do home visits in Kakkanad?” — with its own treatment plan, fees, timings and the physiotherapist’s qualifications — gives an answer engine something concrete to quote. A page that only says “best physiotherapy in Kochi” gives it nothing.
